When Tim Russert died late last week, I was reminded of my one and only encounter with the TV legend.
It was a few months ago in Des Moines, IA. We were both covering the Iowa Caucuses. I was doing a live shot at about 6 in the morning, when Russert walked in. He walked right next to me, and did a live report for WHO-TV, the NBC affiliate in Des Moines. Right after he finished talking, he turned to me and said, "Hey, you know which famous person used to work at WHO?" Luckily, I knew the answer. It was Ronald Reagan, who used to work at WHO radio in Des Moines.
I gave Russert my answer. He smiled and said, "You're right." And then he walked away.
