DENVER -- A former television news executive said he'll use the $47,000 he won on a game show to help pay court-ordered restitution stemming from securities fraud. Scott Alan McDonald of Littleton pleaded guilty to felony theft in 2001. He was sentenced to a community corrections program, and given 12 years to repay $181,500.
McDonald appearance on "Wheel of Fortune" aired Wednesday. He said he was never asked about his criminal history when he became a contestant on the show.
Prosecutors said McDonald masterminded a series of fraudulent investment schemes backed by phony documents to lure the victims, including local television media personalities, into giving him large sums of money, which he used to gamble.
Among the victims conned out of money was veteran television reporter and consumer advocate Tom Martino. In a civil suit filed against McDonald after his arrest, Martino alleged that McDonald used his position as managing editor of Fox-News KDVR to pressure employees -- including Martino -- into loaning him money.
Before working at Channel 31, McDonald worked at KUSA-Channel 9 for five years where he was a sports producer and assignment editor. He now works as a car salesman.
